Testing effectiveness of locking elements 30 May 2025

According to Bolt Science, up to 47% of structural node failures are due to loosened bolted connections, which is a serious problem designers are trying to solve, guided primarily by data from manufacturers and distributors of locking elements. In response, Ferodom Ltd has developed the Tiger Power Timer – a software which assesses the effectiveness of locking elements.

When trying to solve the issue of loosened bolted connections, one fundamental thing is being forgotten. Just as there is no universal method for securing bolted joints that would be equally effective for all types of stressing, this means in the axial or transverse direction, there is no universal testing method either. The popular Junker vibrations test (DIN 65151) is only legal for variable stresses acting in the transverse direction – but unfortunately it is currently used more for advertising than serious testing purposes. For assessing structural elements stressed in the axial direction, the axial pulsator is used.

In an effort to provide designers and users with objective information about the effectiveness of locking elements, Ferodom introduced the Tiger Power Timer (pictured right). After entering the necessary data, this practical tool will reliably provide information about the effectiveness of common locking elements, including Vargal® nuts, IstLock® locking nuts, HARDLOCK, HELICOIL®, RIPP LOCK®, wedge washers, among others, against transverse and axial stressing. With objective information on the properties of individual structural elements, the integrity of the structure can be assured.

Tiger Power Timer is a user-friendly system that is readily available – once installed on a computer it is ready to be used.
