LOCTITE coatings drive major efficiency and sustainability gains 16 May 2025

Global adhesive and coatings specialist LOCTITE® has helped a major UK-based water board achieve significant energy savings and efficiency improvements for its 1,500 kW water pump system.

By applying LOCTITE®’s advanced protective coatings, the customer has increased hydraulic efficiency by 5.35%, leading to annual energy savings of 600,300 kWh and an estimated 480-ton reduction in CO₂ emissions.

Water pump efficiency naturally declines over time due to wear, corrosion, and surface deterioration, leading to increased energy consumption, higher maintenance costs and potential downtime. Studies indicate that pumps lose 1–1.5% efficiency annually, making protective coatings an attractive and affordable solution to optimise performance and reduce long-term operational expenses.

By applying LOCTITE®’s high performance protective coatings, the pump system benefited from a smoother, low-friction surface that optimised water flow and minimised energy loss. In addition to reducing turbulence and surface roughness, the coatings created a protective barrier against erosion, corrosion, and chemical wear, helping to prevent further deterioration. These enhancements resulted in greater efficiency, extended equipment lifespan, and reduced maintenance requirements, with a payback period of less than two months.

Bob Orme, senior application engineer at LOCTITE® says: "This project demonstrates how LOCTITE® solutions not only protect equipment but also deliver significant cost savings and environmental benefits. By preventing efficiency losses and reducing energy consumption, we enable industries to optimise performance while meeting our customer's sustainability commitments."

LOCTITE offers a range of epoxy and ceramic-reinforced coatings designed to enhance efficiency and durability in water pump systems. These include LOCTITE® PC 7337 – a hybrid epoxy with oleophobic properties for high-abrasion resistance and long-term protection; LOCTITE® PC 7255 – a sprayable ceramic-reinforced epoxy coating designed for a smooth, durable finish that enhances hydraulic performance; as well as LOCTITE® PC 7227 – a brushable ceramic epoxy that provides resistance against wear and corrosion while ensuring easy application.
