Replacing mechanical fasteners in electric motors 18 June 2025

Structalit® 5859 is a new adhesive system developed by Panacol-Elosol GmbH specifically designed for magnet bonding within electric motors – thus removing the need for traditional mechanical fasteners such as screws or rivets. This adhesive can be used for magnet or rotor bonding, as well as joining magnets in pole housings.

Structalit® 5859 is a one component epoxy resin adhesive that cures at temperatures as low as 100°C, with curing time reduced to as little as five minutes at 150°C. The adhesive also features a long open time and can be processed at room temperature for up to seven days.

Due to its high glass transition temperature (Tg) of 143°C, Structalit® 5859 has a tensile shear strength of 17 MPa on steel – even at temperatures of 150°C. In addition, the adhesive is characterised by high impact strength and good elongation at break, which makes it possible to use the product with material pairings that have different coefficients of thermal expansion.

Other key features include gap bridging, as Structalit® 5859 is able to compensate for production related tolerances. Also, the adhesive is resistant to aggressive contact media such as oil or coolant and offers damping properties against the dynamic loads often found in the product’s intended applications.
