A PFAS-free future in fastener coatings 25 March 2025

As a leading provider of functional coating solutions, SurTec is setting new standards with its latest innovations – precote® 85 PFAS-free, a pre-applied coating for screw locking, and precote® 15, a high performance solution for immediate thread sealing.

Demands on industrial fastening technology are constantly increasing. Whether in the automotive, mechanical engineering or electromobility industries, screw connections have to meet the highest safety and performance standards. At the same time, manufacturers are under growing pressure to develop more sustainable alternatives and eliminate environmentally critical substances, such as PFAS (per and polyfluorinated alkyl substances).

For years precote® 85 and precote® 15 have been reliable coating systems in industrial applications. precote® 85 is based on a microencapsulated acrylic formulation that enables high-strength screw locking with controlled friction – ensuring outstanding mechanical performance, as well as high resistance to temperature and chemicals, which is crucial for applications in electromobility.

precote® 15 is a non-reactive coating designed for the immediate sealing of cylindrical and tapered threads. It forms a dry, elastic film that ensures a secure seal immediately after assembly. This makes it useful in battery housing manufacturing, where it prevents leaks and enhances long-term stability.

Sustainability as a driver of innovation

A key aspect of modern coating technologies is the reduction of environmentally critical substances. The elimination of PFAS plays a central role in this shift. With its latest development, precote® 85 PFAS-free, SurTec is making a clear statement for sustainable material innovations. This coating will be available in series production from March 2025, offering a more environmentally friendly alternative for industrial fastening applications.

Beyond fastener coatings, SurTec International GmbH also develops water-based, PFAS-free sealants for battery housings and lubricants for shaft seals. These innovations contribute to making electromobility concepts more sustainable and durable.

Collaborations for maximum efficiency

The success of functional coating solutions depends on their seamless integration into existing production and development processes. SurTec, therefore, collaborates closely with industry leaders such as AVL Deutschland GmbH – who brings extensive experience in vehicle development and system integration, while SurTec contributes its expertise in fastener technology to deliver optimal coating solutions.

This strategic partnership allows innovative coatings to be incorporated early into the design and simulation processes of new vehicle architectures. The results are tailored solutions that meet both the technical and economic demands of global manufacturers.

Why fastener coatings are more important than ever

With the increasing miniaturisation and performance enhancement in many industries, the demands on fastening technology are also rising. Threaded connections are subjected to extreme loads, while still needing to remain easy to assemble efficiently. Without suitable coatings, issues such as material fatigue, corrosion or leaks can arise, compromising the safety and longevity of components.

Modern coating technologies such as precote® 85 and precote® 15 play a crucial role in overcoming these challenges. They enhance not only mechanical stability, but also process reliability and environmental sustainability in industrial applications.

“The continued development of precote® 85 and precote® 15 sends a clear signal for the future of fastener coatings,” emphasises SurTec. “The combination of a sustainable formulation and proven high performance makes these coatings an ideal choice for companies prioritising safety, efficiency and environmental responsibility. With these innovations, we are setting new benchmarks in coating technology – advancing industrial safety while paving the way for a more sustainable future.”
